WordPress 2.3, tags, categories and why I don’t like it
WordPress 2.3 is in beta development as we speak, and one of the main new features is embedded tag support. I'd say jay, because I'm a big supporter of seperate tags and categories, mainly because you can do fun things with the categories, while you keep the tags to give some simple information on the essence of the post. Now you might ask, what fun things can you with categories?
Well for one, you can filter the hell out of your posts using categories, like the linkdump in my middle column, or the boldmember posts on ochblog, some pretty straightforward things you could do with categories. Another thing is something wich has been on my wishlist for long, a forum wich is integrated with the categories. In such a forum you could easily put frontpage posts (or threads to be precisely) in the forum, or vice versa just by adding categories to the post.

To see what I'm talking about, take a look at this. A pretty much standard WordPress 2.2.3 install, but with a forum based on the category system. It's done by tweaking the TDO Miniforms plugin, adjusting some templates and working with the hierarchical category system supplied by WordPress. And there we're getting to the thing I really don't like about WordPress 2.3; the hierarchical categories are dropped in this version, wich causes this forum to stop working.
I was rather dissapointed when I read the news about this, especially since I spent some time working on this forum system. Now maybe I could get it to work with the new term and term group functionality in 2.3, but I guess I'll just have to test/code/debug it all over the new WordPress 2.3, just to keep up to date with WordPress. Wich is just swell for something you've just spent some of your time getting to work.

Al die extra build-in features van de laatste tijd zijn idd niet helemaal het van je. Widgets build-in en nu dit.
Ze zouden het in 2 smaken moeten uitbrengen. Met en zonder die shit.
Zijn die tags nu á la UTW?

Ligt eraan hoe je het bedoelt. Er is een importer voor UTW tags, dus in dat opzicht wel. Maar een tagcloud moet je bijvoorbeeld weer via een plugin creëren. Dus dan weer niet.
En die built-in dingen hoeven voor mij ook niet, ik zie liever dat de Wordpress ontwikkelaars een stuk af wat goede plugins maken en ondersteunen. Dan hoef je niet een aantal dingen in het geheugen van de server te laden die je toch niet gebruikt, wat de prestaties ten goede komt. (zie de talloze och-down mailtjes)
Uiteraard kun je als je niet van toeters en bellen houdt altijd nog terugvallen op de WP2.0 lijn, die nog onderhouden wordt tot 2010. Op zich geeft dit een aantal voordelen, zo werken functies niet plotseling op een andere manier na een update, iets wat bij bijvoorbeeld 2.1 naar 2.2 wel gebeurde. Nadeel is natuurlijk dat je in 2010 ineens met een heleboel functies zit die anders werken, omdat dan de ondersteuning voor 2.0 wegvalt.

komt overigens nog bij dat wordpress in de database de tags en categorieën in dezelfde tabel bewaart, er is dus geen strikte scheiding wat weer problemen kan opleveren met plugins e.d.
